ASD: Autism Spectrum disorder

Literature is now suggesting that 1 in every 59 children born will receive a diagnosis of somewhere on the ASD spectrum. ASD presents in different ways. One of the most common symptoms would be a sensory seeking or avoidant behaviors leading to difficulties maintaining social reciprocity, joint attention, heightened emotion or withdrawal into self.

What does neurodiversity mean for the way we think about Autism?

The neurodiversity paradigm offers the Autistic and non Autistic community a framework by which we can celebrate who we are, how we exist, and what we have to offer. It allows the Autistic community to describe all of the "self", including Autism.  Adopting the neurodiversity paradigm means that individuals can encompass their whole authentic selves without listing each and every “disorder” or “diagnosis”. Parents can focus on the strengths of their child without the pressure to "fix" and fit into society's norm.   We aim for the Autistic community to feel worth and value because of their differences, not despite them.

Working through this lens allows me to appreciate and value the strengths, gifts and talents that exists in each and every one of us while supporting the goals that are important for the child and family.
